Crochet a Beret

Time: 3 hours

This hat took me 3 tries to get it perfect. These instructions should be good for any 4 ply thread. The Caron one I used is stiff. It helped shape the beret. There are several ways to use this beret and I love how it is great for long curly hair. You can wear it tilted to the side like an artist or pulled down as a slightly slouched hat or straight up like a king’s crown. All my hair fits inside when I put it in the hat.

It’s basically crocheting in a flat round. then making a band.

hook size: K – 6.5mm for crown
Use H,G,D and J hooks for the band when indicated. Use a metal G and D hook because you will be doing a tight stitch that takes some strength.

Row 1: make a magic circle and dc 12. sl st (You can also use a ch 4 and slip stitch instead of a magic circle.)
Row 2: ch 3, 1 dc in same st as the ch 3. 2 dc in each stitch in next 11 st., sl st in 3rd ch in first ch 3.
Row 3: ch 3, 1 dc in same st as the ch3, 1 dc, 2 dc in next st, repeat 11 more times.sl st in 3rd ch in first ch 3.
Row 4: ch 3, 1 dc in same st as the ch3, 2 dc, 2 dc in next st, repeat 11 more times.sl st in 3rd ch in first ch 3.
Row 5: ch 3, 1 dc in same st as the ch3, 3 dc, 2 dc in next st, repeat 11 more times.sl st in 3rd ch in first ch 3.
Row 6: ch 3, 1 dc in same st as the ch3, 4 dc, 2 dc in next st, repeat 11 more times.sl st in 3rd ch in first ch 3.
Row 7: ch 3, 1 dc in same st as the ch3, 5 dc, 2 dc in next st, repeat 11 more times.sl st in 3rd ch in first ch 3.

The crown should be approximately 10.5-11” in diameter and lay flat. Please measure. Add or remove a row if needed. My round is a little different than the classic method. It is to make sure there are no gaps.

variation 1: at each v stitch (2 dc in each stitch making a v shape) make a ch 1 between the 2 dc. (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc in the same stitch). This variation makes a starburst
pattern.

variation 2: Use a sc for the brim for very structured hat. Use 10-11 stitches in first row because 12 stitches made a crown that did not lay flat.

3” Band:
This is continuing from the crown area.
Row 8-9: sl st in 1st ch. Using an I-hook (5.5mm) crochet 2 rows of sc. sl st, continue in a round. (Use a stitch marker to the first stitch so you will know when you reached the end of a row.)
Row 10-11: Use an H- Hook (5.0mm), do 2 rows of sc.
Row 12-13: Use a G-hook (4.0mm), do 2 rows of sc.
Row 14-15 Use a D-Hook (3.25mm) do 2 rows of sc.
Row 16-17: Use a G-hook (4.0mm) for rest of project and do 2 rows of sc. Sl St the whole row for a clean edge.
Finish off.

Notes:
At row 15, make sure the hat fits on your head. Add or remove a row if needed.

For a tight fit, in row 15, skip every 6th stitch.
