Joyful Hat and Booties

Yarn: Acrylic Baby or Worsted Yarn  (#2,#3, #4 or #5 yarn)

Needles: Size 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9 Straight Needles / Use 16″ Circulars for Newborn Hats

Foot Sizes: 5-6 lb Preemie (3”), Newborn (3.5”), 3-6 months (4”) Hat sizes: Preemie (12”), Newborn (13”), 3-6 months (14”)

This pattern is for easy basic knitted hat and basic booties. I did it for 5 different needle sizes. I knit loosely continental style. If you knit tighter than me, try going up in needle size. This is for a variety of yarns and needle sizes if you figure out which pattern works best for your yarn. The following patterns are for the Newborn size.  You can use a variety of stitch patterns and lengths for your own personal touches.

 

Joyful Booties Pattern A  : Needle size 2 (2.75 mm) #2 yarn

Cast on 23 sts

Row 1: (RS) kfb in 1st st, k9, kfb in next 2 sts, k9, kfb, k1 (27 sts)

Row 2, 4, 6, and 8: knit only

Row 3: kfb in 1st st, k11, kfb in next 2 sts, k11, kfb, k1 (31 sts)

Row 5: kfb in 1st st, k13, kfb in next 2 sts, k13, kfb, k1 (35 sts)

Row 7: k16, kfb in next 2 sts, k17 (37 sts)

Row 9: k17, kfb in next 2 sts, k18 (39 sts)

Row 10-18: starting and ending on WS knit 9  rows (39 sts)  

Row 19: (RS) k23, ssk, turn (38 sts)

Row 20-30: wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k8, ssk, turn (repeat this row until there are 9  sts unworked on right needle and have a total of 27 sts before you turn work.)

Row 31: (RS) wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k to end of row  (27 sts)

Row 32-33: knit only (27 sts)

Row 34: (optional) eyelet row  – k1, *YO, k2 tog*, repeat * to * to the end of row. (27 sts)

Row 35-49: knit only for 15 rows (27 sts) [note: if you want to do 1 x 1 rib for cuff, kfb 1 st at the beginning of row 34 to make 28 sts and *k1. p1* for 26 rows]

Row 50:  bind off loosely. Leave about 14” of tail. Fold right sides inside and seam back and sole.

For ties: With a size D (3.25 mm) crochet hook, chain 90. With thumb nail scoot up end chains so it makes tight knots at ends so that you can trim the edges after weaving them through the eyelet holes.

Optional design: knit rows 19 to 49 in stockinette for a different look. (Back of stockinette: P8, ssp, turn.) Top of cuff will be a roll cuff.  For an anklet bootie repeat rpt Row 20 two extra times ending with 25 sts total and Bind Off loosely.

Matching fold brim hat: size 2 needles take too long to knit a hat. Use Pattern B or C Hat.

 

Joyful Booties Pattern B: Needle size 3 (3.25 mm)  #2 or #3 yarn

Cast on 21 sts

Row 1:  (RS) kfb in 1st st, k8, kfb in next 2 sts, k8, kfb, k1 (25 sts)

Row 2, 4, 6, and 8:  knit only

Row 3: kfb in 1st st, k10, kfb in next 2 sts, k10, kfb, k1 (29 sts)

Row 5:  kfb in 1st st, k12, kfb in next 2 sts, k12, kfb, k1 (33 sts)

Row 7:  k15, kfb in next 2 sts, k16 (35 sts)

Row 9:  k16, kfb in next 2 sts, k17 (37 sts)

Row 10-16: starting and ending on WS knit 7 rows (37 sts)  

Row 17:  (RS) k22, ssk, turn (36 sts)

Row 18 – 28: wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k8, ssk, turn (repeat this row until there are 8 sts unworked on right needle before you turn) (25 sts)

Row 29: (RS) wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k to end of row (25 sts)

Row 30-31: knit only (25 sts)

Row 32: (optional) eyelet row  – k1, *YO, k2 tog*, repeat * to * to the end of row. (25 sts)

Row 33-45:  knit only for 13 rows (25 sts) [note: if you want to do 1 x 1 rib for cuff, kfb 1st at the beginning of row 33 to make 26 sts and *k1. p1* for 24 rows]

Row 46:  bind off loosely. Leave about 14” of tail. Fold right sides inside and seam back and sole.

For ties: With a size E (3.5 mm) crochet hook, chain 86. With thumb nail scoot up end chains so it makes tight knots at ends so you can trim the edges after weaving them through the eyelet holes.

Optional design: knit rows 17 to 45 in stockinette for a different look. (Back of stockinette: P8, ssp, turn.) Top of cuff will be a roll cuff.  For an anklet bootie repeat rpt Row 18 two extra times ending with 23 sts total and Bind Off loosely.

Matching fold brim hat: Use size 3 circular needles 16” length and cast on 64 sts. (knit row 1, purl row 2 and repeat these for garter stitch)  Knit any stitch or pattern for 7” and then *k2tog* each row until you have 8 sts left for a gathered crown. Close up remaining sts with 8” end tail and knot on inside and weave in ends.

For an 8 section shaped crown: Start decreasing at 2.5” from top using DPNs. Row 1 -”K6, k2tog* (56 sts)  Row 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 Knit only. Row 3 – ”K5, k2tog* (48 sts)  Row 3: *K4, K2tog* (40 sts) Row 5 – *K3, K2tog* (32 sts) Row 7: *K2, K2tog* (24 sts) Row 9: *K1 K2tog* (16 sts) Row 11: *K2tog* Close up remaining sts with 8” end tail and knot on inside and weave in ends.

 

Joyful Booties Pattern C: Needle size 5 (3.75 mm)  #3 or #4 yarn

Cast on 19 sts

Row 1:  (RS) kfb in 1st st, k7, kfb in next 2 sts, k7, kfb, k1 (23 sts)

Row 2, 4, 6, and 8:  knit only

Row 3: kfb in 1st st, k9, kfb in next 2 sts, k9, kfb, k1 (27 sts)

Row 5: kfb in 1st st, k11, kfb in next 2 sts, k11, kfb, k1 (31 sts)

Row 7: k14, kfb in next 2 sts, k15 (33 sts)

Row 9: k15, kfb in next 2 sts, k16 (35 sts)

Row 10-14:  starting and ending on WS knit 5 rows (35 sts)

Row 15: (RS) k20, ssk, turn (34 sts)

Row 16 – 26: wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k6, ssk, turn (repeat this row until there are 8 sts unworked on right needle before you turn and have a total of 23 sts)

Row 27:  (RS) wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k to end of row (23 sts)

Row 28- 29:  knit Only (23 sts)

Row 30: (optional) eyelet row  – k1, *YO, k2 tog*, repeat * to * to the end of row. (23 sts)

Row 31-41:  knit only 11  rows (23 sts) [note: if you want to do 1 x 1 rib for cuff, kfb 1 st at the beginning of row 31 to make 24 sts and *k1. p1* for 22 rows]

Row 42: bind off loosely. Leave about 14” of tail. Fold right sides inside and seam back and sole.

For ties: With an F size (3.75 mm) crochet hook, chain 82.  With thumb nail scoot up end chains so it makes tight knots at ends so you can trim the edges after weaving them through the eyelet holes.

Optional design: knit rows 15 to 41 in stockinette for a different look. (Back of stockinette: p6, ssp, turn.) Top of cuff will be a roll cuff.  For an anklet bootie repeat rpt Row 16 two extra times ending with 21 sts total and Bind Off loosely.

Matching fold brim hat: Use size 5 circular needles and cast on 56 sts. (knit row 1, purl row 2 and repeat these for garter stitch)  Knit any stitch or pattern for 7” and then *k2tog* each row until you have 8 sts left for a gathered crown.  Close up remaining sts with 8” end tail and knot on inside and weave in ends.

For an 8 section shaped crown: Start decreasing at 2” from top using DPNs. Row 1 –    ”K5, k2tog* (48 sts), Row 2, 4, 6 and 8 Knit only. Row 3: *K4, K2tog* (40 sts) Row 5 – *K3, K2tog* (32 sts) Row 5: *K2, K2tog* Row 7: *K1 K2tog* Row 9: *K2tog* Close up remaining sts with 8” end tail and knot on inside and weave in ends.

Joyful Booties Pattern D: Needle size 7 (4.5 mm)  #4 Yarn  (Updated 9-4-16)

Cast on 17 sts

Row 1:  (RS) kfb in 1st st, k6, kfb in next 2 sts, k6, kfb, k1 (21 sts)

Row 2, 4, and 6:  knit only

Row 3: kfb in 1st st, k8, kfb in next 2 sts, k8 kfb, k1 (25 sts)

Row 5:  kfb in 1st St, k10, kfb in next 2 sts, K10, K1 (29 sts)

Row 7: k13 kfb in next 2 sts, k14 (31  sts)

Row 8-12:  starting and ending on WS knit 5 rows (31 sts)

Row 13: (RS) k18, ssk, turn (30)

Row 14 – 22: wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k6, ssk, turn (repeat this row until there are 7 sts unworked on right needle before you turn and have a total of 21 sts)

Row 23: (RS) wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k to end of row (21 sts)

Row 24 -25:  knit only (21 sts)

Row 26: (optional) eyelet row  – (ws) k1, *YO, k2 tog*, repeat * to * to the end of row. (21sts)

Row 27-35:  knit only for 9  rows (21 sts) [note: if you want to do 1 x 1 rib for cuff, kfb 1 st at the beginning of row 27 to make 22 sts and *k1. p1* for 20 rows]

Row 36: – Loosely bind off. Leave about 14” of tail. Fold right sides inside and seam back and sole.

For ties: With a size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook, chain 78. With thumb nail scoot up end chains so it makes tight knots at ends so you can trim the edges after weaving them through the eyelet holes.

Optional design: knit rows 13 to 35 in stockinette for a different look. (Back of stockinette: p6, ssp, turn.) Top of cuff will be a roll cuff.  For an anklet bootie repeat rpt Row 14 two extra times ending with 19 sts total and Bind Off loosely

Matching fold brim hat with gathered crown: Use size 7 circular needles and cast on 48 sts. (k row 1, p row 2 and repeat these for garter stitch)  Knit any stitch for 7” and then on each knit row *k2tog* until you have 8 sts left. Close up and knot on inside and weave in ends. For an 8 section  shaped crown, see Pattern B Hat and start at Row 3 for Decreasing.

For an 8 section shaped crown: Start decreasing at 1  3/4 from top using DPNs.  Row 1 –  ”K4, k2tog* (40 sts), Row 2, 4, 6 and 8 Knit only. Row 3: *K3, K2tog* (32 sts) Row 5 – *K2, K2tog* (24 sts)  Row 7: *K1, K2tog* (24 sts) Row 7: * K2tog* Close up remaining 8 sts with 8” end tail and knot on inside and weave in ends.

 

Joyful Booties Pattern E: Needle size 9 (5.5 mm)  #5 Yarn

Cast on 15 sts

Row 1: (RS) kfb in 1st st, k5, kfb in next 2 sts, k5, kfb, k1 (19 sts)

Row 2, 4, and 6:  knit only

Row 3:  kfb in 1st st, k7, kfb in next 2 sts, k7 kfb, k1 (23 sts)

Row 5: kfb in 1st St, k9, kfb in next 2 sts, K9, K1 (27 sts)

Row 7: k12 kfb in next 2 sts, k13 (29  sts)

Row 8-10: starting and ending on WS knit 3 rows (29 sts)

Row 11: (RS) k17, ssk, turn (28 sts)

Row 12-20: (WS) wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle, k6, ssk, turn (repeat this row until there are 6 sts unworked on right needle before you turn ending with  19  sts)

Row  21: – (WS) wyif sl 1 st from right needle to left needle, wyib slip that same st back to right needle,  k to end of row (19 sts)

Row 22-23: knit only (19 sts)

Row 24: (optional) eyelet row  – (ws) k1, *YO, k2 tog*, repeat * to * to the end of row. (19sts)

Row 25-31: knit only for 7 rows (19 sts) [note: if you want to do 1 x 1 rib for cuff, kfb 1 st at the beginning of row 22 to make 20 sts and *k1. p1* for 18 rows]

Row 32: Loosely bind off.  Leave a 14” tail. Fold right sides inside and seam back and sole.

For ties: With a size H (5 mm) crochet hook, chain 74. With thumb nail scoot up end chains so it makes tight knots at ends so you can trim the edges after weaving them through the eyelet holes.

Optional design: knit rows 11 to 21 in stockinette for a different look. (Back of stockinette: p6, ssp, turn.) Top of cuff will be a roll cuff.  For an anklet bootie repeat rpt Row 18 two extra times ending with 17 sts total and Bind Off loosely.

Matching fold brim hat with gathered crown: Use size 9 circular 16” needles and cast on 40 sts. (k Row 1, p Row 2 and repeat Row 1 and 2 for garter stitch)  Knit any stitch for 7” and then on each knit row *k2tog* until you have 8 sts left. Close up and knot on inside and weave in ends.

For an 8 section shaped crown: Start decreasing at 1  1/4” from top using DPNs.  Row 1 –  ”K3, k2tog* (32 sts),  Row 2 and 4 Knit only. Row 3: *K2, K2tog* (24 sts) Row 5 – *K1, K2tog* (16 sts) Row 5:*K2tog* Close up remaining 8 sts with 8” end tail and knot on inside and weave in ends.
