#4 Worsted Weight Yarn

Gauge 16 sts/4” stockinette

DPNs to Match Gauge (#5, #6 or #7)

Sizes S (M, L)  

S is large child, M is teen and women, L is Mens

 

Loosely cast on 30 (36, 42) sts and divide on 3 DPNS

Cuff:  Knit 2×1 Rib Pattern for 3.5” (4”, 4.5”)    2×1 Rib Pattern: *K2, P1*

Thumb Increase*: 14(17, 20)sts of 2×1 Rib, PM, P1, PM, 15(18,21)sts of 2×1

Row 1: 14(17, 20)sts of 2×1 Rib, SM, M1, K to Marker, M1, SM, 15(18,21)sts of 2×1

Row 2 and 3: Knit 2 rows in 2×1 Pattern and plain stockinette between markers

Repeat last 3 rows row 2 (3,4) more times. You should have 9 (11, 13) thumb sts.

14 (17,20) sts of 2×1 rib, place 9 (11,13) thumb sts on stitch holder, cast on 1 st on right needle, 14(17,20) sts of 2×1 rib

Palm to fingertips:  Do 2×1 Rib Pattern for 5” (5 ¾””, 6.5”) , then bind off with #9 needle. Break off yarn.

Thumb: Put live thumb sts on 3 DPNs, picking up 3 sts of gap near thumb on the 3rd dpn

Using new yarn end, knit 14 (16, 18) rows of stockinette st.

*k2tog* to end. With blunt needle, gather sts and draw through inside of mitten. Break Yarn.

Finishing: Weave in all ends well closing any gaps. No knots or you will feel it.

 

*Alternate 2×1 Rib Thumb Increase:  After cuff, set up thumb increases 14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, PM, P1, PM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 1:    14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, M1, P1, M1, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 2 and 3:   14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, K1, P1, K1, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 4:   14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, M1, K1, P1, K1, M1, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 5 and 6:   14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, K2, P1, K2, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 7:  14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, M1, K2, P1, K2, M1, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib

Row 8 and 9:  14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, P1, *K2, P1* 2 times, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 10:   14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, M1, P1, *K2, P1* 2 times, M1, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 11 and 12:   14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, K1, P1, *K2, P1* 2 times, K1, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Thumb increases for size S is complete in 9 stitches. Go to Palm to Fingertips section

Row 13:  14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, M1, K1, P1, *K2, P1* 2 times, K1, M1, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 15 and 16:  14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, *K2, P1* 3 times, K2, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Thumb increases for size M is complete in 11 stitches. Go to Palm to Fingertips section

Row 17:  14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, SM, M1, *K2, P1* 3 times, K2, M1, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Row 18 and 19:  14 (17,20)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern, P1, *K2, P1* 4 times, SM, 15(18,21)sts 2×1 Rib Pattern

Thumb increases for size L is complete in 13 stitches. Go to Palm to Fingertips section

After Palm to Fingertips area, go to Thumb area and complete in 2×1 Rib Pattern.

*K2tog* to close up top or  do 3 extra 2×1 Pattern Rib rows and bind off with a #9 needle for fold down thumb. Weave ends well, closing any gaps.
