Family Stockinette Mittens

 

Sizes: Toddler (Toddler, Medium Child, Small Adult, Medium Adult)

Yarn: Worsted or Aran #4 Medium washable

Gauge: 18 sts= 4” for larger needles

Tools: Use what gives you gauge, try #5 and #6 DPNs for looser knitters or #7 and #8 DPNs for tighter knitters

Measurements: Hand above cuff 4”(5”, 6”, 7”, 8”)

 

Cast on 24 (28, 32, 36, 40) divide on 3 smaller needles, join in the round. Let end tail mark the beginning of round

Cuff: Rib in any rib pattern for 2”( 2”, 3”, 3”, 3.5”)

Palm: Stockinette stitch (st st) for 0 (1, 2, 3, 4) round(s)

Thumb gusset: K11 (13, 15, 17, 19), kfb,  k to end (1 thumb st)

Knit next round

K11 (13, 15, 17, 19), kfb twice, k to end (3 thumb sts)

Knit next round

K11 (13, 15, 17, 19), kfb, k2, kfb, k to end (5 thumb sts)

Knit next round

K11 (13, 15, 17, 19), kfb, k4, kfb, k to end (7 thumb sts)

Knit next round

Continue increasing  2 stitches at a time with alternating st st rounds until you have  9 (11, 13, 13, 15) thumb sts

Cover Fingers: K12 (14,16,18, 20), put thumb sts on holder, K12 (14,16,18, 20)

St st until you are 1″ from the end of the mitten for kids sizes and 1 1/4″ from the end of adult sizes.

8 (10, 12, 12, 14) rounds

Place a marker at the midway point of stitches. For example, between the 12th and 13th st of the toddler size.

Decrease top: [Ssk, K to 2 sts before the marker, K2tog] twice

Knit next round

Repeat these 2 rounds 2 more times for children’s sizes and 3 times for adult sizes

*K2tog* to close children’s sizes and *K3tog*, k2tog or *K3tog* to close adult sizes

Secure end and weave in from the wrong side

Thumb: Put the thumb sts on 3 DPNs (go up a needle size if you work tighter in small spaces like me.)

Attach new yarn with a 7″ tail

K4 (5, 6, 6, 8), k2tog, k to end – which makes 8 (10, 12, 12, 14) total thumb stitches

St st in the round for  3/4” ( 1“, 1/4”, 1  1/2”, 1 3/4”) – knit for  4 (5, 7, 9, 11) rounds

*K2tog* close, secure end and weave in, Sew bottom of thumb well so there are no gaps, secure and weave in ends.
