Family Stockinette Mittens

edited 9-21-17 to perfect and simply pattern

Sizes: Toddler (Small Child, Medium Child, Small Adult, Medium Adult, Large Adult, Tall Adult)

Yarn: #4 Aran (Red Heart Super Saver, Caron One Pound)

Gauge: 16-17 sts= 4” for larger needles

(For Worsted, go up 1-2 sizes keeping the length desired. Gauge 18-19 sts = 4″)

Measurements: Length of hand above cuff 4”(5”, 6”, 7 ”, 8″, 9″)

Cast on 24 (28, 28, 32, 32, 36, 36) divide on 3 smaller needles, join in the round. Let end tail mark the beginning of round

Cuff:  Using smaller needles, knit in any rib pattern for 1.5”( 2”, 2”, 3”, 3”, 3″, 3″). Double the length for a fold up cuff.

Palm:  Switching to larger needles, stockinette stitch for  0 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) round(s)

Thumb gusset: K11 (13, 13, 15, 15, 17, 17), kfb,  k to end (1 thumb st)

Knit 2 stockinette rounds

K11 (13, 13, 15, 15, 17, 17),  kfb twice, k to end (3 thumb sts)

Knit next round

K11 (13, 13, 15, 15, 17, 17), kfb, k2, kfb, k to end (5 thumb sts)

Knit next round

K11 (13, 13, 15, 15, 17, 17), kfb, k4, kfb, k to end (7 thumb sts)

Knit next round

Continue increasing in this manner 2 stitches at a time with alternating st st rounds until you have  9 (11, 11, 13, 13, 15, 15) thumb sts

Cover Fingers K12 (14, 14, 16, 16, 18, 18), put thumb sts on holder, K to end)

St st until you are 1.25″ (1.5″, 1.5″, 1.75″, 1.75″, 2″, 2″) from the end of the mitten

Place a marker at the midway point of stitches. For example, between the 12th and 13th st of the toddler size.

Decrease top: [Ssk, K to 2 sts before the marker, K2tog] twice

Knit next round

Repeat last 2 rounds 1 (2 ,2, 3, 3, 4, 4)  more times until you have 16 sts left.

*K2tog* to and gather all sts with 7″ tail.  Secure end and weave in from the wrong side

Thumb: Put the thumb sts from stitch holder on 3 DPNs

Attach new yarn with a 7″ tail inside.

Knit all sts. Increase 1 st on last stitch on just the first round of thumbs sts for Toddler, Medium Child and Medium Adult and Tall size.  Total thumb sts will be 10 (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16) sts.

St st in the round for  1″( 1.25″ 1.5″ 1.75″, 2″, 2.25″, 2.5″) Close thumb with K2tog and K3tog decreases to end with 5-6 sts. For a more pointed thumb, decrease to 5-6 sts within 2 rounds. Gather stitches with 7″  tail, secure and weave in from inside.  Sew gap hole of thumb with the tail from when you first attached yarn to thumb.  Weave end well so it will not come out in wash or show on right side.

 

Abbreviations: st(s) – stitch(es), K – Knit, kfb – knit front and back of a single stitch to increase by one stitch, SSK – Slip 2 stitches separately knit-wise, put back on left needle and knit these 2 stitches together to decrease by 1 stitch, K2tog – Knit 2 stitches as one to decrease by one stitch, K3tog – knit 3 stitches as one to decrease by 2 stitches
