Current Project – Comfort Knitting Basic Socks

Pattern: https://joyfulintribulation.wordpress.com/2021/03/13/comfort-knitting-basic-socks/

Supplies:

5” wood or bamboo DPNs

100 grams of multi colored fingering weight sock yarn

Measuring tape with 1/16” increments

Scissors

Locking stitch markers minimum of 4

Darning needle

Calculator

Notebook or note taking device

Pen

NOTES:

stitches ➗ width = gauge. Round to nearest whole or half number (ex: 8.5” or 9”)

Measuring foot for sock:

Foot circumference – with measuring tape measure around the ball of foot (just below toes)

Foot Length – heel to toe stepping on measuring tape without shoe on.

Ease is 10% (you can change it but this is a good starting point)

Figure your Foot Circumference With Ease: Foot circumference – 10% (ex: 8.5” – 10% = 7.65”)

Fractions to Decimal: Numerator ➗ Denominator (ex: 9/16” is 9 divided by 16 = 0.5625)

Cast On Stitches is Foot Circumference With Ease ✖️ gauge. Round to nearest multiple of 4 (ex: 7.65” x 9sts = 68.85 or 68sts)

Figuring out what size to make: Foot Circumference With Ease Width = Foot Circumference With Ease ➗ 2 (use this measurement to determine sock size for most women’s sock patterns)

Small: Small Adult/ Large Child 3.5” (US Women Size 4-6)

Medium: Medium Adult 3.75” (US Women Size 7-9)

Large: Large Woman/ Medium Man 4” (US Women Size 10-12)

3/22/21 – Foot, Measuring the Toe

Length Gauge – Rows of stitches per inch lengthwise. My gauge is 9sts, 12 rows per inch.

Rounded Wedge Toe – 1/3 of decreases with 2 plain rounds, 1/3 decreases with 1 plain round, 1/3 of decreases with no plain rounds.

Toe decreases is 20 rounds for a 68 stitch sock.

Sock ease lengthwise is 1/4”. A 9” foot – 1/4” is 8 3/4”. The sock is to measure 8.75”

Toe length = Rounds ➗ Rounds per inch. 20 rounds ➗ 12 rounds per inch = 1.67”

Foot length before starting the toe is 8.75 – 1.67” = 7.08”. You must knit 7” before starting the toe if you have a 9” foot measurement.

Stitch markers used have multiple names when you look them up such as bulb stitch markers or gourd stitch markers.
